Iowa cross country: Seivert eases to victory in qualifying meet

HAWARDEN, Iowa —Led by senior Leah Seivert, the Sibley-Ocheyedan girls cross country team is on to state.

The Generals competed Thursday at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Hawarden. Seivert claimed first place at the meet, finishing the course in 14:36. She was complemented by the efforts of teammates Makayla Tangeman (16th, 17:55), Kim Cuadros (34th, 19:04) and Jada Carlson (36th, 19:16).

Seivert became a four-time state qualifier while winning the 2013 meet with ease. Second place went to Grace Meyer of Pocahontas Area, who competed the 4K course in 15:51.85.

Class 1A’s top-ranked Pocohantas Area took first in the girls team race, trailed by Emmetsburg and Sibley-Ocheyedan at 2-3. The top three teams and top 10 individuals from each qualifying meet will participate in the state meet, scheduled for Nov. 2 in Fort Dodge.

Trinity Christian’s Alex Van Ginkel became a four-time state qualifier in the boys race. Trinity, Maple Valley/Anton-Oto and Alta-Aurelia made up the three teams who advanced to state.

For Sibley-Ocheyedan’s boys team, Andy Taverna led the way with a ninth-place finish in the 5K race, with a time of 18:30.

Trinity Christian won the boys team event, followed by Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto in the No. 2 spot and Alta-Aurelila at No. 3. West Lyon finished fourth.
