Iowa girls basketball: G-LR advances, H-LP edged
Even though Harris-Lake Park’s high-scoring Noreen Morrow was lost to injury in the first quarter, the Wolves were nearly able to move past Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire Tuesday night in the second round of the Iowa Class 1A, Region 1 girls basketball tournament.
Nearly, that is. GTRA edged H-LP 48-46.
In another Class 1A, Region 1 contest, George-Little Rock defeated Akron-Westfield 49-44. The Mustangs next face Le Mars Gehlen Catholic Friday in Sioux Center.

AKRON, Iowa — In a low-scoring affair, George-Little Rock managed to put three players in double figures to turn away host Akron-Westfield.
Teyha Graham scored 16 points while going 4-for-9 on her three-point tries. Jessica Sandbulte had 12 points and six assists. And Danielle Eben added 11 points and seven rebounds.
“We knew we had to step off the bus ready to play,” said George-Little Rock head coach Heather Grafing. “Two of my starters actually played with the flu tonight — Mia Graham and Mariah Terhark. I told them they didn’t have to play but they just gutted it out.”
Kortney Hedlund scored 10 points to pace Akron-Westfield.
George-Little Rock led 30-23 at the half but could not pull away in the second half. “It was a close game. The girls kept their composure,” Grafing said.

LAKE PARK, Iowa — Morrow, who has averaged about 19 points per game this season, suffered a knee injury after scoring three points and was not able to return. Still, the Wolves fought all the way. In a tight game, GTRA took a lead with about three minutes left in the contest. With about a minute remaining Harris-Lake Park trailed by four and free throws began being exchanged. H-LP trailed by one with eight seconds remaining, GTRA made the first of two free throw attempts and missed the second, and H-LP was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Mikey Heikens scored 19 points to lead the Wolves offensively. Katherine Ihnen added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Marley Bakken scored 14 points for Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire.
Harris-Lake Park finishes the 2013-14 campaign with a 16-7 record. Those 16 wins is the most G-LR has earned in a season in the five-on-five era.
