Iowa man dies in car-vs.-semi accident
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Lyon County Sheriff's Office investigated a semi-vs.-car accident at 5:06 p.m. Tuesday at A52 (260th Street) and K30 (Elmwood Avenue).
Gilbert and Betty Teunissen of Inwood, Iowa were traveling north on K30. As they approached A52, there was a semi truck in the southbound lane driven by Duane Middle of Rock Valley, Iowa, attempting to make a left turn onto A52. Middle waited for another vehicle to pass through the intersection but did not see the Teunissen vehicle and started to turn in front of it. The vehicles collided in the intersection.
Gilbert Teunissen, age 79, was transported to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls by the Sanford Helicopter with life-threatening injuries while his wife, Betty, 75, was transported by the Lyon County Ambulance with non-incapacitating injuries. Gilbert died later at the Avera Hospital due to injuries received in the accident.
Teunissen's 2011 Toyota Avalon received approximately $15,000 in damage, while the 2001 Freightliner semi owned by Hartland Farms of Doon, Iowa received approximately $10,000 in damages. Middle, 55, was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Doon Fire and Rescue, Sioux County Sheriff's Office, Rock Valley Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Lyon County Ambulance, and Sanford Helicopter.
