Iowa prep football: Sibley-Ocheydan, Sheldon prevail

PAULLINA, Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs opened up their football season with a well-deserved 33-7 victory Friday at South O’Brien.

Matt Buenger connected with Alex Strouth in the end zone from 16 yards out to open the game’s scoring in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Joe Weppler broke off a 90-yard touchdown to give the Orabs a 14-0 lead. Weppler wasn’t done as he pounded it in from the one-yard line and Sheldon had a comfortable 20-0 lead.

Sheldon did not sit back as Buenger trotted into the end zone once more before the half and Sheldon led 26-0 at the mid-way point.

Buenger got loose in the third quarter and ran in another touchdown from 71 yards out to make it 33-0.

South O’Brien avoided being shutout in the fourth quarter as Derian Arrick carried the ball for a 20 yard touchdown run.

Buenger led the Orabs offensively, going 5-7 for 61 yards passing with a touchdown. Buenger also ran for 156 yards on 15 carries and two rushing touchdowns. Colby Kleinhesselink rushed for 57 yards on 12 touches. Weffler racked up 96 yards on only five carries and had two rushing touchdowns. Strouth led Sheldon’s recievers with 47 yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Darin Greenfield led the Orab defense, getting in on 12 tackles and had added a fumble recovery. Jacob Andringa also had a nice night, contributing on 11 tackles.

Damon Struve led South O’Brien’s offense with 88 yards on 19 rushes.

S-O 21, Gehlen 14

SIBLEY, Iowa — The Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals started off their season nicely with a narrow victory over LeMars Gehlen.

It was Gehlen which opened up the scoring in the first quarter when Solomon Freking found the endzone on a 20-yard touchdown run. Gehlen went for the two point conversion, but had no luck.

Gehlen would take a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

Sibley-Ocheyedan got on the board after Garrett Sayler found Mitch VanderVeen for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and the Generals took a 7-6 lead in the game.

Sayler extended the Gererals’ lead as he ran one in from the two-yard line to make it 14-6 at the half.

In the third Sibley-Ocheyedan looked to break the game open when Sayler found Trent Kruger in space for a 59-yard touchdown pass and Sibley-Ocheyedan led Gehlen 21-6 going into the fourth quarter.

Gehlen attempted a comeback in the fourth when Freking punched it in from the goal line and Freking converted the two-point conversion to make it 21-14 and that is where it would end.

Ethan Mino rushed for 75 yards on 16 carries for the Generals and Sayler ran for 20 yards and a touchdown on 11 rushes.

Sayler was also 6-17 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

The Generals’ defense was led by Luis Santana with 11 tackles. Colby Wagenaar and Kramer Grimes each had interceptions.

Gehlen was led by quarterback Solomon Freking who rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and passed 138 yards, going 9-21.

Robert Gunter had five receptions for 97 yards for Gehlen.

North Iowa 21, H-LP 14 (Half)

BUFFALO CENTER, Iowa — The game between North Iowa and Harris-Lake Park was postponed at halftime due to lightning. North Iowa was leading Harris-Lake Park 21-14 at the half.

The game will continue today at 1 PM.

INWOOD, Iowa — Central Lyon/George-Little Rock will take home the bragging rights this year as they blew out bitter rival West Lyon.

Pete Menage led the way for the Lions by passing for 250 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns to snap the defending class A state champs’ 14-game winning streak on West Lyon soil.
