Iowa prep softball: Sheldon comeback falls short
SHELDON, Iowa — Sheldon put together a valiant comeback effort Thursday but came up one run short in its non-conference battle with LeMars.
The Orabs plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut its three-run deficit to 9-8, but Bulldogs’ pitcher Kassidy Rieken was able to induce a flyball to second to end the game. The loss was the first of the season for Sheldon after it outscored opponents 27-6 in its first two contests of the season; both of which were wins.
Early on it looked like LeMars might run away with it when it scored two in the first and added three in third to claim a 5-0 lead.
Krista Bousema jump-started Sheldon’s offense in the third when she slammed a two-out home run to put the Orabs on the board. Two batters later, Abbi Meendering pounded a triple that scored Jessica Van Beek. Sami Kleinwolterink followed that with an RBI double before Kelsey Den Hartog tied things up on a two-run triple.
The lead didn’t last long. The Bulldogs scored one in the fourth, but Sheldon matched that. However, two runs in the fifth and another in the seve–nth put the visitors up 9-6, going into the Orabs’ final at-bat.
With two outs in the frame, Sydney Iedema ripped a single to keep her team alive. Den Hartog followed with her second three-bagger of the night before Haley Jungers dropped in a single that plated Den Hartog got the Orabs within one.
Bousema was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Den Hartog was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Kleinwolterwink allowed five earned runs in the loss.
