Iowa state track: Seivert super again for Sibley-Ocheyedan
DES MOINES, Iowa — A new classification was no problem for Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Leah Seivert Thursday.
She did so with a time of 10:28.35 in the Class 2A title race. As a junior Seivert was the Class 1A state champion and was also the runner-up in the 1,500-meter run. Thursday’s was her third overall state championship as she won the Class 1A 1,500-meter crown as a freshman. Last year she placed second in that event and will be running it again on Saturday morning. Seivert also took second place in the Class 1A State Cross Country Championships in the fall with a time of 14:10.5.
Her state title scored 10 points for the Generals, putting them in a four-way tie for third at the end of day one of the three-day meet with only five events scored.
Sheldon also got into the scoring conversation in Class 2A with a sixth-place finish from Katie Kneifl. She earned three points for the Orabs in the long jump with a leap of 16-3, putting them in a three-way tie for 22nd place with three points.
Both teams ended the day with a bang by qualifying their 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay teams for Saturday’s final. Caitlin Cain, Bryn Groff, Maddie Tolk and Allorie Feekes finished in 1:08.40 for the Orabs with the Generals’ crew of Tayler Wasmund, Jill Berkland, Jada Carlson and Jillian Bosma coming in shortly after at 1:08.87.
In Class 1A, Madison Henning got George-Little Rock on the scoreboard with a fifth-place finish. The Mustangs ended the first day of competition in a three-way tie for 18th with four points after Henning finished the 400-meter dash in 1:00.73.
Along with Seivert, Maleah Doeden competed in two events for S-O but couldn’t quite make it out of the preliminary rounds. She ran the 2A 100- and 200-meter dashes in 13.19 and 27.08 to take 2 th and 19th, respectively. Sheldon’s Allegra St. Clair ran the 100 in 13.06 seconds to take 20th-place overall.
S-O competed in just one boys’ event Thursday and came away with 12th place. Carson Marco, Beck Greene, Kyle Lowe and Dalton Frick teamed up to finish the 4x110-meter shuttle relay prelim in 1:00.73 but could not quite qualify for Saturday’s final.
Tom Schilling competed in his first event of the weekend for G-LR, posting a distance of 18-8 in the long jump to take 16th in Class 1A.
The state championships pick back up at 9 a.m. this morning at Drake Stadium with events in Classes 1A and 4A. Tanner VerSteeg, Schilling, Ben Conaway and Jesse Henrichs will compete in three relay races for the Mustangs; the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. Classes 2A and 3A get fired up at 2 p.m. with the S-O girls competing in four events and both the General boys and Sheldon girls competing in one. Erin Swensen, Bridget Doeden, Peyton Crichton and Maleah Doeden will run the 4x200 for the Generals with Carlson and Wasmund both going solo in the 100-meter hurdle prelims. Carlson, Swenson and both Doedens will cap off the night in the 4x100 prelims. Greene will run the 400-meter hurdle prelims today for the S-O boys with Cain running the 100-meter hurdles for the Orab girls.
