JCC's Hartzler is regional Triple 'A' winner
JACKSON -- Joel Hartzler, a senior at Jackson County Central High School, was recognized Thursday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall for being selected to represent Region 3A in the Academics, Arts and Athletic (Triple 'A') Award Program.
"I like playing football and I'm also in the swing choir, which is really fun," said the quarterback on JCC's conference football championship team and all-conference selection in fall 2009. "I like the camaraderie and working as a team."
Hartzler has also been involved in basketball, baseball, band, choir, and the school musical. He was a member of student council and the National Honor Society and attended Boys State last summer.
Hartzler said he balances his full schedule with "hard work and just determination to get stuff done."
In his application, Hartzler wrote: "All of the activities I have been in have taught me many lessons I know will assist me in my future. Hard work is one of the most important things I have learned. Without hard work and discipline there can rarely be success.
"I also have learned leadership. As the quarterback of the football team, I learned how to lead my team in the best way possible."
He's considering studying finance in the future.
"As of right now, I'm not sure which college I'm going to go to; I think I'll do something with business," he said.
Hartzler, who has a 3.8 grade point average, is the son of Greg and Amy Hartzler of Alpha. He will be honored during the banquet March 27 in Minneapolis, where the state Triple 'A' Award winner will also be announced.
Other sub-regional representatives included Briel Hendricksen, JCC; Kathryn Dahl, Luverne; and Justin Feit, Adrian.
The award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.
