LUVERNE -- In a field of over 30 wiener dogs, Kali came all the way from Rock Rapids, Iowa to run away from the field Thursday night at the fifth-annual wiener dog races in Luverne.

Alex Rust, one of the owners of Kali, said he did not expect to win the event.

"It feels pretty good, I'm real excited," Rust said. "I didn't think it would happen."

Rust, said that from the very beginning, he knew the two-year old Kali was fast.

"(I knew she was fast) when she started to run and jump up on furniture," Rust said.

The Rusts' have owned Kali for two years, and have been preparing her for this event.

"We would bring her out in the backyard and do it just like this, with this distance and have her run back and forth," Rust said.

This is Kali's second appearance at Luverne, but the first win. Last year, she lost in the second round to the dog who was the champion.

With an event like this, Rust said the key is the prize at the end.

"Have a t-bone at the end for her to get," Rust said. "That's what we had, a t-bone with some meat on it."

While Rust and Kali can enjoy their stardom until next year, they plan on returning to defend the title.

"We'll probably come back next year and hopefully win it again," Rust said.
