Lake Park to break ground on Veterans Memorial

LAKE PARK, Iowa -- The Freedom Rock/Veterans Memorial Committee in Lake Park is planning a groundbreaking ceremony for the new memorial at 8 a.m., Aug. 3, in Memorial Park just east of the Lake Park Community Building, 903 S. Market St.

Fundraising efforts are progressing with several different businesses and individuals donating, including Consumers Lumber Company, Spirit Lake; Great Lakes Insurance Services, Lake Park, Estherville & Armstrong; Great Lakes Countertops, Lake Park & Le Mars; Jennings Tow and Repair, Spirit Lake; Northern Iowa Die Casting, Lake Park & Spirit Lake; Landmark Products, Milford; Buy Rite Foods, Milford & Lake Park; and Milford Well Service, Milford.

Forever Landscaping and Design, Milford will begin the first phase of construction by laying the brick pavers as the base for the memorial; then the rocks will be placed and the United States Flag and pole will be installed. Additional flag poles and landscaping will be done as donations come in.

In early September, Ray "Bubba" Sorenson, the artist and visionary of the "Freedom Rock Tour", will be in Lake Park to begin painting the Dickinson County Freedom Rock with images and ideas supplied by the committee and community members.

The public is invited to the Aug. 3 groundbreaking ceremony.
