Lake Park clerk retires after 30 years
LAKE PARK, Iowa — Vernette Palmer, Lake Park’s city clerk, worked her last day Friday after 30 years of service to the community.
Palmer’s duties as city clerk saw her act as the community’s chief financial officer. During her tenure, Palmer oversaw the city’s $1.7 million operating budget.
“Vernette was a wonderful steward of the city’s resources,” Lake Park City Administrator Wade Wagoner said. “Her experience made her very familiar with the intricacies of city budgeting, but more than that she was thrifty, keeping past administrators and councils within budget, which was perhaps Vernette’s strongest skill.”
During Palmer’s service, the city’s combined fund balances grew to approximately $1.5 million.
“The healthy fund balances we enjoy today, we owe in large part to Vernette’s oversight,” Wagoner said.
Palmer plans on a somewhat restful summer.
“I plan on doing nothing this summer,” Palmer joked. “I’m hoping to spend more time with my grandkids, as well as do some more camping, but otherwise I have no further plans.”
