Lake Park shooting investigation turned over to DCI
LAKE PARK, Iowa -- An investigation into the shooting of a 6-year-old girl Sunday in Lake Park, Iowa, has been turned over to the Iowa Division of Criminal Apprehension (DCI).
According to a news release issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers from the Lake Park Police Department and Dickinson County Sheriff's Office responded to a request for emergency assistance in the 300 block of Sixth Street and found the girl injured with a gunshot wound.
She was taken by air ambulance to Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. The last contact the Lake Park Police Department had with the victim's family reported the girl was in stable condition.
The DCI was contacted for assistance and is conducting an investigation into the incident.
Law enforcement is not actively seeking an unknown assailant and has identified an individual believed responsible for causing the injury.
Chief Public Information Officer Courtney Greene said Wednesday that an accidental shooting has not been ruled out.
"The DCI are simply fact finders," she stated. "Decisions on charges are made by the charging entity."
In this case, the charging entity would be the Dickinson County Attorney's Office.
Anyone with information that may be of assistance to investigators is asked to contact the DCI at (712) 262-1873.
