Lakefield's Summerfest features fun for all ages
LAKEFIELD -- The 2013 edition of this week's Lakefield Summerfest will be "high-lighted" by a completely novel bit of fun.
"Our newest activity is a Relay for Life Glow 5K Run/Walk," Lakefield City Clerk Kelly Rasche explained. "Participants will be wearing glow sticks and light things, and will be guided by glow in the dark paint on the streets."
The run benefits Jackson County Relay for Life, and there is no set entry fee (there is a free-will donation). Registration begins at 8 p.m. Friday evening in North City Park.
Another new attraction offers an opportunity for area residents to find out if that maybe-it's-valuable china is actually worth something.
"On Saturday, Tom's Terrific Antique Road Show will be at the JCC Middle School gym," Rasche said. "People can brings items in that they want to know the true worth of, and Tom will evaluate them (the items)."
Although the 2013 Summerfest has some new events, traditional favorites still remain.
"The Summerfest Little Miss and Mister Pageant is Wednesday, and on Friday, before the glow run, Lakefield businesses sponsor the Family Fun Night in the park," Rasche said. "The Saturday highlights are the parade and street dance."
Minnesota is full of endearing-small town traditions, and Lakefield's annual community photo is a great example, despite only being about five years old.
"It was the brainchild of the editor of the Lakefield Standard," Rasche described. "After the parade, everyone on Main Street comes together, and a photographer is lifted in a bucket truck and takes a picture."
This year, the community is celebrating the reconstruction of Main Street, where the parade takes place, and there will be a dedication ceremony after the photo.
Rasche isn't certain when the community's annual celebration began.
"It has been going for a long time," she said. "It started out as Lamb Days, then became Pork Days, and finally Summerfest."
It's no matter if the festival is, or isn't, named after meat.
"We are hoping for nice weather and that everyone has a chance to participate in our activities," Rasche said.
