REDWOOD FALLS — The Luverne American Legion Post 123 baseball team took a disappointing loss Sunday at the Division II, District II Tournament, but a win Saturday means it still has a chance to take the title.

Luverne took a 14-6 victory over Jackson in Saturday’s quarterfinals before taking an 11-3 loss to Blue Earth on Sunday to fall into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

Post 123 was guilty of five errors in the loss.

“We played well enough to win if it wasn’t for our defense,” Luverne coach Barry Shelton said.

In Saturday’s contest, a massive fourth inning provided enough punch for Luverne to put up 14 runs and take the win.

Jackson Post 130 took the early lead with two runs in the top of the second, but a four-run bottom of the inning pushed Luverne into the driver’s seat.

Jackson responded with a 4-spot of its own and held the lead until the fourth when Luverne exploded for seven runs.

Gunnar Olson went four and two-thirds innings, allowed two hits and struck out three to get the win. Scott Christopher took the loss for Post 130.

Post 123 flexed its muscles at the plate, slamming three home runs in the contest.

The biggest of those came off the bat of Josh Slieter when he pounded a grand slam. Skyler Wenninger and Olson both came through with solo knocks as part of a two-hit day for each. Wenninger drove in two runs in the victory. Logan Norman added two hits and two RBIs with Zane Hiller banking two hits.

Andrew Hesse notched two of Jackson’s three hits.

The momentum didn’t last for Luverne, however, as it surrendered eight unearned runs in the 11-3 loss to Blue Earth in the semifinals.

Blue Earth scored eight of its runs in the first two innings to go up 8-0 before Luverne finally got on the board in the fourth.

Hiller took the loss, throwing one and two-thirds and allowing three earned runs. Connor Hoffman went the rest of the way in relief.

Olson was 3-for-3 with a home run while Slieter hit another big fly as well. Hiller and Hoffman had two hits each.

Luverne will play again at 1 p.m. Friday in Redwood Falls.
