Legion baseball: Windom, Jackson win easily
WINDOM — The Windom American Legion baseball team cruised into the second round of the West Sub-District II playoffs Thursday with an 11-3 win over Redwood Falls.
No. 4-seed Windom got on the sticks right away, putting up three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-1 lead. From there a combination of four Post 206 pitchers kept fifth-seeded Redwood Falls from getting much going.
Joe Wieneke got the win in relief. He went three innings and allowed two runs while striking out four. Zach Siegfried took the loss for Redwood Falls.
Wieneke also had a big night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jack Mellstrom was also 2-for-3 with a run driven in with Zach Steen slamming a two-run single.
With the win, Windom will take on top-seeded Luverne at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Luverne High School fields.

JACKSON — Chris Gumto dominated Wabasso Thursday to lift Jackson to a convincing 9-0 win over Wabasso in the first round of the West Sub-District II playoffs.
The No. 3 seed got a single run in the first inning when Scott Christopher drove in Easton Bahr. Ryan Christopher scored in the home half of the third inning to put Jackson on top 2-0, and that was plenty for Gumto.
Gumto was electric, throwing six innings of one-hit ball while striking out 13. That kept Wabasso at bay until Jackson exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Arp allowed one hit and struck out one in the top of the seventh.
Ryan Christopher was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for Jackson. Jared Bakalyar was 3-for-4 with a run scored with Andrew Hesse going 2-for-3.
Jackson will travel to Luverne for its sub-district semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday.
