Legion baseball: Worthington goes winless at tournament
ALEXANDRIA — It was a rough weekend for the short-handed Worthington American Legion Post 5 baseball team in Alexandria.
Post 5 got into a wild one on the tourney’s final day. It scored a single run in the first and five in the second to get out to a 6-0 lead. Starbuck came back in the bottom of the second with an eight-run inning to take the driver’s seat.
“That was the difference-maker,” Worthington coach Jeff Nelson said. “Other than that inning we played a pretty good game. We came back and tied it up but they just kept making us crawl back.”
A pair in the third knotted it at 8-all, but Starbuck scored three in the fourth to pull ahead for good.
A.J. Hayenga, who was pitching for the first time since Pee-wee League, according to Nelson, took the loss, going one and one-third in the start. Jordan Bertrand, Ryan Lee and Nate Ray had two hits each for Post 5.
It was the second straight near-miss for Worthington. It held an 8-6 lead over North St. Paul in the second game Saturday, only to see its opponent score six in the fifth inning to claim the lead and, eventually, the win.
Lee took the loss on the hill, going five innings and striking out three. Alex Purdy had three hits for Post 5 with Roque Soto belting a triple and a single.
Worthington fell in a big hole against Oakdale. After scoring one in the top of the first, Post 5 saw Oakdale put up four in the first and three in the second to take a 7-1 lead.
Post 5 allowed only two runs after that, but the damage had been done.
Soto took the loss, going one and two-thirds innings and striking out two. Blake Rogers hit a pair of doubles with Tyler Hatterman adding a two-bagger of his own. Blake Fauskee added two hits for Worthington.
Post 5 will have a chance to rest up before traveling to New Ulm for a doubleheader on July 15. The previously scheduled doubleheader against Fairmont that was supposed to be today has been postponed.
“We’re gassed,” Nelson said. “The guys battled, though.”
