Legion Baseball: Worthington Legion goes 2-1 in tournament
PIPESTONE -- The Worthington Legion Post 5 baseball team went 2-1 at the Luverne Tournament over the weekend, which took place at two sites, in Luverne and in Pipestone.
Worthington defeated Pipestone 8-0 in the tournament opener Friday, with starting pitcher Deron Soderholm pitching seven innings while allowing just two hits.
"Deron was a work horse for us this weekend," Legion coach Todd Rogers said.
Soderholm picked up six strike outs in the game and gave up just one walk.
A.J. Hayenga and Lucas Henning each had two hits on the day to help Post 5 get the win.
Worthington took on BOLD in Game 2 Saturday and came away with a 9-6 decision, despite making five errors in the game.
"We need to start playing better defense," Rogers said. "We can't give up four or five errors in a game."
Soderholm was credited with the win in Game 2 after pitching four innings. Henning pitched the middle three innings.
Hayenga had two hits to lead the offense for Post 5.
In the second game Saturday, Worthington used four different pitchers in a 5-4 loss to Groten, S.D.
Tristan Sorensen, Nathan Ray, Jorden Bertrand and Blake Rogers all took their turns on the mound, giving up a combined five runs on four hits.
"If we gave up a walk or had an error, it seemed like [BOLD] would score on it," Rogers said. "We need to start playing errorless ball."
Hayenga, Tyler Hatterman and Henning each had two hits in Game 3 to lead the offense.
Worthington travels to Jackson today with a 7 p.m. start, then takes on Pipestone Tuesday.
