Legion: Post 5 loses twice in New Ulm
NEW ULM — The Worthington Post 5 American Legion baseball team went on the road and took a pair of losses Tuesday to close out the regular season.
In a non-league doubleheader, Post 5 first dropped a tough 3-2 decision against New Ulm Blue before seeing New Ulm Gold explode for seven runs in the sixth to break away from a 2-2 tie in the nightcap. Gold handed Worthington its second loss of the night, 9-2.
New Ulm Blue got on the board right away in game one, scoring two runs in the home half of the first inning. Worthington got both back in the third, but Blue got the decisive third run in bottom of the fifth.
It was a true pitcher’s duel as the two teams combined for only 10 hits. Worthington’s Ryan Lee went all seven innings in the loss. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out five and walked four.
Post 5 finished the night with four hits, all of which were singles. Jordan Bertrand was 2-for-3 with Blake Rogers and A.J. Hayenga adding a hit each.
New Ulm Gold put Worthington in a 2-0 hole once again in the second game. For the second time, Post 5 came back to knot things up with a two-run third.
The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth when the home team finally broke through offensively. It hung a 7-spot on the board to put the game on ice.
Nathan Ray took the loss for Worthington, pitching three and two-thirds innings and striking out six.
“He did great,” Worthington coach Jeff Nelson said. “He just was getting kind of worn down in the sixth.”
Tyler Hatterman led the way at the plate by going 2-for-3. Rogers added a double with Logan Thuringer, Ray and Tristan Sorenson knocking in a single each.
Worthington will find out when it opens district play and who it will take on tonight.
