Letter: Band reunion event a night to remember
Saturday evening's Alumni Reunion band concert at Worthington's beautifully renovated Memorial Auditorium was stunning, outstanding, amazing, emotional, nostalgic and so well done.
Those of us in attendance were in awe as the band opened with "Strike Up the Band," under the baton of director Richard Larson. There were tributes to Gerald Niemeyer, Glenn Evensen and Richard "Dick" Larson, which brought tears. The trilogy "Tribute," arranged by former WHS grad Tom Peck and honoring both Niemeyer and Evensen, also brought tears to many. The Worthington "Rouser" brought many of us to our feet, and we sang along. Weston Noble, longtime music director and now director emeritus at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, spoke last and was the icing on the cake.
The committee headed up by Steve Rubis conquered a tremendous task and I, as a small worker bee, found it a privilege to have been a part of the group. I needed that. The three-day musical event was truly a one-of-a kind musical experience, and Saturday's concert was the culmination that truly was "A Salute to Excellence." Thanks for the memories.
