Letter: County gives away taxpayers' money
Recently our supervisors refunded more than $3,000 in property taxes to Atlas of Osceola County. They had filed documents to become a non-profit. Before their filing, they had paid property tax on their building. Now they do not. They do not pay for police or fire protection or snow removal, being tax-exempt.
Atlas may be a legitimate non-profit; I don't know. Our supervisors did not have our county attorney review their filing for their status.
The refund of money that the county board returned to Atlas was not its money to give away. It belonged to the taxpayers of Osceola County. I hope that every supervisor is serving their last term.
