Letter: Crippen column inspires childhood memories

Email

While reading Ray Crippen's Feb. 9 column, his mention of the tent show rang a bell.

I grew up in Estherville and there was a tent show set up every year on some property north of the Rock Island railroad, probably on North Fourth or North Third Street. I'm not sure, but my memory tells me it was in the late '30s, or maybe 1940. It was the depth of the Depression.

I loved movies and anything theater and music. Since they had popcorn, candy and soda pop stands, a few of us young kids who lived nearby would go and clean up the mess left from the night before. We received free tickets as pay (a reward) for each night's different play. It was so much fun to see and hear live talent.

This is one of my favorite childhood memories.
