Letter: Give all families equal protection and repeal DOMA
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) singles out lawfully married same-sex couples under federal law, denying them more than 1,000 federal protections and responsibilities. Unfair-minded advocates of DOMA say that the law is in the best interests of children, but they're wrong. The Child Welfare League of America, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association have all stated that LGBT parents raise children who are just as healthy and productive as those raised by straight parents.
The reality is DOMA harms three million parents and their six million children in the U.S. by imposing unjust financial burdens on them, restricting their access to health care and treating them like second-class citizens. It's time we ended this wholesale discrimination against LGBT people and their children. I urge you to contact your representatives in Congress and ask them to support the Respect for Marriage Act and repeal DOMA and grant LGBT-headed families the recognition, protections and respect they deserve.
