Letter: The juggernaut of public education
The most natural and healthy thing a child does is sleep. The most unnatural and unhealthy thing they do is spend all day in school.
My 6 1/2-year-old daughter is extremely active mentally and physically, but if she needs a nap at school they take her chair away and make her stand.
The science of psychology has learned that peak efficiency is maintained by napping. My daughter for the first time says she doesn't like school because they won't let her nap when her mind needs it. She gets eight to 10 hours of sleep every night, but her age sometimes needs a nap, and often when she gets home.
John Dewey, the father of modern education, knew it long before massive research showed it. What kids learned the first four years of school can be learned in six months when their brains are further developed.
The reason kids are schooled long before it is necessary is money and parents who need day care. The latter may be legitimate, but it should be a choice and a mandate. This premature academic grindstone our kids are subjected to burns them out and leads them to high dropout rates and poor performance.
The reason homeschooling has mushroomed in the last 10 years is a move away from the unnatural setting of public schools, and because they teach that frogs turning into princes is science after first being taught it's a fairy tale. They also outperform public schools in SAT scores significantly. Kids taught evolution are much more likely to shoot up a school than those taught to respect the 10 Commandments of God.
