By Jeanene R Townswick, Worthington Early Risers Kiwanis Club

October 5 was Kiwanis Peanut Day, an event organized by Kiwanis each year to raise funds. In Worthington, it is sponsored by the Early Risers Kiwanis Club with combined help from local businesses along with K-Kids from grades 3 and 4 at Prairie Elementary. The businesses that helped us with our endeavors were Ace Hardware, Fareway, Hy-Vee, Runnings and ShopKo. We sincerely thank these businesses for their support.

In the fall, at school registration time, Kiwanis has a booth where students in grade 3 and 4 sign up for K-Kids. K-Kids is an international club with the following pledge: “I promise to serve my neighborhood and my school; I will show respect toward my environment; and I will try to make the world a better place in which to live.” With the assistance of members of the Early Risers Kiwanis Club the students who become K-Kids learn leadership qualities, parliamentary procedures and participate in fund raisers. During the school year K-Kids have gym nights at Prairie Elementary, attend a basketball game as a group and help with the Veteran’s Day Program, plus various other fun events.

Peanut Day occurs once a year, and the funds raised go to support various local clubs. This year, those clubs are K-Kids Sponsored Youth, Builders Club Sponsored Youth, Renaissance Program (Middle School), Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Worthington Hockey Association, Manna Food Pantry, Dollars for Scholars, YMCA Sustaining Fund, QWIK Awards, Worthington Soccer and (new this year) Kiwanis K-Leader Club where local students ages 14-18 may apply to attend a weekend camp to learn leadership skills.

Early Risers Kiwanis thanks those individuals who willingly contributed to Peanut Day and made it our most successful year. When individuals entered the stores listed above, they were met with beautiful smiles on K-Kids children’s faces asking, “Would you like to donate to Peanut Day?” Regardless of the size of the gift, it was appreciated. We are fortunate to live in a city where we have caring people. Together Early Risers Kiwanis will achieve its mission, “Serving the children of the world.” Thank you for your gifts — they are appreciated, and will be used wisely.

Worthington Early Risers meets at 6:45 a.m. each Thursday morning at the Pizza Ranch. If you would like to be part of this fun group, please call me at 372-2325 or just stop by any Thursday morning. We welcome new members.
