Letter: Let's think about who may be committing treason
By Marvin Kroontje, Magnolia
If one would ask the average American who they thought were traitors to this country many might say Edward Snowden, the NSA stool pigeon. Some might say Bowe Bergdahl, who may have been a deserter. But who would say Medtronic, as noted in the June 16 Daily Globe (“Medtronic to buy Covidien for $42.9B, rebase in Ireland”)?
Medtronic moved its executives to Ireland, aiming to lower corporate tax rates abroad. Thanks, guys, for supporting the nation that made you and other billionaires.
Dick Cheney’s old company, Halliburton, reportedly set up 17 tax haven subsidiaries in Dubai, 13 in the Cayman Islands, two in Lichtenstein and two in Panama. Halliburton burns through hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars supplying the military as long as long as they can keep some wars going on, but don’t expect them to pay any tax.
A U.S. corporation set up a foreign subsidiary and either overprices or underprices its products that it buys or sells to avoid paying American taxes. They base in low tax or no tax countries. In 2000, 63 percent of U.S. corporations paid no U.S. taxes. The list of tax evaders keeps getting bigger, and the U.S. budget keeps getting deeper in debt.
Corporate greed and brain-dead politics are selling out America. Who are the real traitors?
