Letter: Letter writer wrong on MCCL voter guide

Email

Mary Henkels ("Voter guide filled with questionable statements," Oct. 19) is mistaken in her criticism of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) and in her understanding of the federal Hyde Amendment.

MCCL has always provided factual pro-life information backed up by science and the law. There is nothing questionable in our 2012 Voter's Guide, just facts. Regarding the Hyde Amendment, the Obama health care law includes carefully crafted language to allow government funding of elective abortions using federal money that is not covered by the Hyde Amendment. The amendment only covers annual appropriations of the Department of Health and Human Services; Obamacare funding does not flow through HHS, rendering the Hyde Amendment irrelevant.

Make no mistake: the Obama health care law does fund abortions. We need no more proof than President Obama's threatened veto of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act -- which would codify the principles of the Hyde Amendment on a permanent, government-wide basis.
