Letter: QUITPLAN works for those who want to stop smoking
By Diane Gustafson, Luverne
As a former smoker, I know that quitting tobacco use can be a struggle. Addiction is a serious matter and my personal journey took me to QUITPLAN Services, a free cessation program available to any Minnesotan, when I decided to quit. I also utilized my insurance provider as they offered free help in my quest to quit smoking. I have been smoke free for more than three months now. My husband and I decided to quit smoking together after nearly 100 years of combined smoking time between us.
With the recent spike in the state’s tobacco tax — a $1.60 per pack increase — it came as no surprise to me that more people have reached out to QUITPLAN Services in the months following the law’s implementation. In fact, new data found that user volumes increased by more than 250 percent in the first two weeks of July, compared to the same time period last year.
I would recommend speaking with a stop-smoking counselor to anyone who is ready to quit. It works, it’s safe and they will provide you with the tools you need to stay the course. Not only will quitting help you save money, you will benefit from an overall healthier lifestyle. And if you still have doubts after seeing the research, take your cue from me or another former smoker and get the help you need to quit.
