Letter: Support youth hockey event this weekend
By Carrie Adams, Worthington
This coming weekend we have an opportunity to support some of our youngest area athletes. On March 7-9, Worthington will be hosting 21 hockey teams from the Mini-Mite/Mite tournament. Teams will be coming from Austin, Brookings, Marshall, Okoboji, Omaha, Sioux Center and Windom. Kids involved at these levels are preschoolers through the age of 8.
I personally invite you to come out and watch some hockey at the ice arena this weekend. Even if you do not have a child in hockey, there are still ways for you to support our youths. For the first time this year, there will be a silent auction taking place throughout the weekend. The other Worthington hockey teams have put together baskets on which you can bid. Some items included in the baskets are: four Minnesota Wild tickets, fire pit, Kindle, various games, everything you need for a movie night, and Team USA and hockey items, just to name a few.
On Sunday morning, there will again be a pancake breakfast from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for students and kids 2 and under eat for free. Pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served in the back room of the ice arena. Everyone is invited to join us for breakfast.
There will be more than 250 kids participating in hockey at our local arena this weekend. Obviously, there will also be parents, siblings and friends coming to Worthington for this tournament. As it is a three-day event, many families will be staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, shopping at our stores and maybe taking in a movie at our theater or enjoying a few games of bowling at our bowling alley. This hockey event has the potential to bring thousands of dollars into our community. Let’s all welcome the young athletes and their families to Worthington. See you at the arena!
