Letter: Volunteers sought for senior dining deliveries
Worthington Minnesota 300 11th Street / P.O. Box 639 56187

By Rhonda Lorang, Assistant Director, Lutheran Social Services, Senior Nutrition Program

In Worthington the Senior Nutrition Program sends out about 45 home-delivered meals to seniors that may not get a hot, nutritious meal. These meals help keep our seniors healthy and able to remain in their own home. We have three routes with about 12 to 15 seniors on each route. We are very grateful for the volunteers we currently have delivering meals. However, there remains an urgent need for additional drivers to deliver meals within the city of Worthington.

We are looking for drivers for all routes. When staff has to deliver meals, it adds to the cost of this community service.

This important service depends on community support. You never know when your own family, friends or neighbor may need a home-delivered meal. Consider this: a year’s worth of senior meals costs less than a one day’s hospital stay.

Drivers can choose between delivering one day a week, one to two weeks in a year, or whatever works with their schedule. All deliveries are within city limits and only Monday-Friday. Youths are welcome to volunteer during their summer and holiday breaks.

Drivers can pick up the meals between 11 and 11:15 a.m. at the Center for Active Living, 211 11th St., Worthington, where staff and volunteers package the meals and where the senior dining location is.

I am hopeful that home-school families, civic organizations, churches, associations and/or businesses will as a group help out a week at a time. A team of two is ideal for delivering; one person drives and the other person navigates and takes the meal to the home. Individuals are also welcome.

Anyone interested in helping can contact me at (507) 360-8803 or call the Center for Active Living at 376-6457. Anyone 60 or older interested in reserving a meal at the Center for Active Living can call the same number.
