LHS boys drop Quasars
LUVERNE -- Outscoring Southwest Star Concept 41-14 in the second half Friday night, the Luverne Cardinals boys' basketball team won the Luverne Cardinal Holiday Classic with a 59-39 victory over the Quasars.
Trailing 25-18 at halftime, Luverne started the second half with a 16-0 surge over the first 5:22 to take a 34-25 advantage.
That run was keyed by Weston Sawtelle (12 points, seven steals), Jake Clark and Andrew DeBoer, as the trio scored eight, five and three points, respectively, before the Quasars scored their first second-half points on Ben Scheevel's putback hoop with 12:09 left.
Luverne extended its lead to 41-27 with 9:20 left after a Derek Boeve 3-pointer and smooth buckets from Clark and Marc Boelman (seven rebounds).
DeBoer (game-high 17 points) later scored five straight points to push Luverne's bulge to 46-29 with 5:21 left.
James Anderson's 3-pointer, James Granstra's inside basket and Scheevel's two free throws helped pull the Quasars to within 12 points (48-36) with 2:49 left, but that's as close as they would get, as Luverne sealed the victory by hitting seven-of-eight free throws down the stretch.
It was the Quasars who controlled things in the first half as Granstra scored 14 of his team-best 16 points -- including a two-handed slam dunk -- to spark SSC in the opening 18 minutes.
But Luverne's full-court pressure defense was a key in holding the Quasars down in the second half, and the Cardinals improved their offensive execution to go on for the victory.
Scheevel had 12 points and three assists for SSC, while Cody Ferguson grabbed five rebounds.
Luverne (7-0) visits Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday, while SSC (7-2) hosts Round Lake-Brewster next Friday.
