Luke Hagen promoted to Daily Republic managing editor
MITCHELL, S.D. — Luke Hagen is the new managing editor of The Daily Republic of Mitchell.
Tupper selected Hagen from a nationwide field of applicants.
“Since he arrived at The Daily Republic in 2008, I’ve seen Luke dedicate himself to constant improvement,” Tupper said. “He possesses a real commitment to journalistic quality, along with a knowledge of Mitchell and the area, and great leadership skills. I’m proud to have him at the helm of the newsroom.”
Hagen, 27, grew up in Alexandria, Minn., and graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in Alexandria. He has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis in print journalism from Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he served as the sports editor of the student newspaper, The Advocate.
He served an internship with the Barnesville Record-Review, worked on the sports desk of Fargo-Moorhead’s daily newspaper, The Forum, and was hired by The Daily Republic in 2008 as a sports reporter.
In 2010, he was promoted to The Daily Republic’s sports editor, and in 2013 was promoted to assistant editor, covering education, outdoors and county government and assisting with newsroom management.
“Mitchell, its community members and the surrounding area have been extremely welcoming since we moved here in 2008,” Hagen said. “I’ve always been proud to help bring the news to those people and all of our readers, and I continue to feel that way. I want to help keep our newspaper as relevant in the community and the area as it has been for years.”
Hagen has won numerous awards for his work. In 2013, he was named South Dakota’s Outstanding Young Journalist by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
