Luverne boys move to 6-0 in hockey
LUVERNE —After assisting on teammate Logan Norman’s first-period goal Friday evening, Luverne eighth-grader Jaxon Nelson later put the puck in the net twice himself, finishing with three points as the Cardinals outscored visiting Minnehaha Academy in boys hockey, 5-3.
Andrew Verhey had a pair of second-period assists for the Cardinals, who are a perfect 6-0 for the season.
Toby Sengvongxay and Nelson scored Luverne’s goals in that second period, while Nelson found the night again early in the third period —assist Chaz Smedsrud —to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead on the Redhawks.
Smedsrud scored Luverne’s final goal, off an assist from Travis Frakes.
Cardinal goalie Kendall Meyer recorded 23 saves, helping Luverne hold off the Minneapolis-based school.
