Luverne defeats Midway
DELANO — Luverne Redbirds manager James Fisher said this week that his amateur baseball team would ride Brian Beuning’s arm wherever it would take them. On Friday, it took them further into the state Class C tournament.
Beuning turned in a dominant pitching performance as the Redbirds opened their portion of the tournament with a 4-0 victory over the Midway Snurdbirds, setting up an Aug. 31 matchup against Maple Lake.
Maple Lake defeated Watkins 9-2 Friday.
Beuning, in a route-going performance, struck out 17 batters. He walked nobody.
The strong righthander got all the run support he needed in the third inning, when Luverne plated a single run. The Redbirds added another run in the fifth, then scored two more in the seventh for insurance.
In a game that produced seven errors — three by Midway and four by Luverne — the Redbirds got eight hits. Beuning went 2-for-4 to help his own cause. Fisher, Joey Slieter, Phil Paquette, Jared Pick, Codie Zeutenhorst and Cody Christensen all added single hits for the winners. Zeutenhorst’s was a double.
With the win, Luverne showed that it was not hampered by rust. The Redbirds had a bye in the first round of the tournament, meaning Friday’s contest was the first for them in two weeks.
Jan-Erik Lindberg, a Pelican Rapids draftee who pitched the Snurdbirds to victory over Upsala, 4-1, in their state opener, was the losing pitcher Friday.
