REDWOOD FALLS -- The girls' tennis season came to an end Monday for most area players, as the first rounds of the Section 3A individual tournament were played on the courts at Redwood Valley High School.

Luverne's Kaityln Deragisch won a pair of matches and earned advancement to Thursday's semifinals, which will be played in St. Peter. The top two finishers will go to the state tennis tournament next week.

Deragisch, the tournament's fourth-seeded singles player, defeated Lac qui Parle Valley's Madolynn Murken (6-0, 6-3) in her first match and then outplayed Ashley Gustafson of Pipestone Area in the quarterfinals, winning in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.

"Kaitlyn played aggressively and it paid off," Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. "She was especially good, in both matches, at drawing her opponent up to the net and then hitting a scoring shot by her on the outside."

Deragisch will face the # 1 seed on the indoor courts at Gustavus Adolphus College at 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

Luverne's Amy Herman, seeded seventh, was defeated by Yellow Medicine East's Sheri Fjermestad in a three-set match, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

In doubles play, the Cardinal tandem of Cathryn Hartz and Autumn Wenzel defeated Montevidio's Kim Danielson and Shelby Monahan (6-4, 6-3), but were stopped by the Martin County West duo of Tony Pribyl and Sarah Manzey (6-1, 6-0) in their next match.

Luverne's doubles team of Tabby Sanderson and Krista Van Dyke lost their opening match to Nicole Felton and Katie Carruthers of River Valley by scores of 6-2, 7-5.

Trojan Girls Finish Season

Worthington's Raquel Leinen was the sixth-seeded singles player and earned an opening round bye, but was defeated by Megan Flohrs of St. James in the second round, 6-1, 6-1.

Kendall Spartz also played singles for the Trojans. She was defeated by LQPV's Murken in the first round, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles competition, both Worthington teams received first-round byes, but were eliminated in the second round.

The ninth-seeded tandem of Kaylee Williamson and Jenny Mammen played a hard-fought match against Redwood Valley's Holly Lussenden and Emma Ali Rummer. The Cardinals won in two sets by identical 6-4 scores.

The Trojan duo of Jessica Vuong and Erin Schulte, the 10th-seeded team, was defeated by the seventh-seeded team of Darci Rinne and Katie Carlson (from St. James), 6-2, 6-1.

"We played with a variety of emotions," said Trojan head coach Mike Marquardt. "It was tough at first, but we kept moving forward one step at a time. I am very proud of all six of our seniors -- Kendall, Kaylee, Jenny, Erin, Jessica and Raquel -- they each showed the true meaning of giving it their heart and soul."
