Driving a 1960s Plymouth, Hopewell was allegedly driving east on Iowa 9 one mile east of Rock Rapids when the deputy attempted to stop him. The suspect pulled over briefly, then took off at a high rate of speed. The deputy pursued, with Hopewell travelling at times over 100 miles per hour.

The pursuit continued into Osceola County, with other law enforcement joining the chase as the suspect turned onto Iowa 60. The pursuit continued through Sibley, Iowa, before Hopewell lost control of the vehicle while trying to exit the highway. He entered the south ditch, and a Lyon County deputy lost control of his vehicle as well. Both vehicles rolled before coming to rest on their wheels.

Hopewell exited and his car and was immediately apprehended by authorities. Neither driver sustained serious injuries, but the deputy was transported to the Osceola County hospital for observation.

Hopewell was charged with eluding a peace officer, careless driving and speeding. As of Tuesday, Hopewell was being held at the Lyon County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

The Iowa State Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
