Marcella A. (Marcy) Kopeste Carlson, 92, was born on June 16, 1921 in Heron Lake, La Crosse township, Jackson County Minnesota. She attended grade school in School District #44, Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from the Heron Lake High School in 1939. She was the daughter of Stephana Fried and Joseph Pelzel. Her mother passed away when she was a junior in high school, so after graduation, she took care of her father, while her fiancé was in active service of the Army. On February 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joseph Kopeste at the Sacred Heart Church in Heron Lake. After marriage, they lived on a farm northwest of Heron Lake, until their retirement. On December 8, 1980, they moved into Heron Lake. Joseph Kopeste passed away on September 21, 1981. On April 5, 1986, she married Loren Carlson in Heron Lake. Loren passed away on November 29, 1994. While residing in Heron Lake, Marcy was an active member of the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women, serving as President and Secretary. She served as Secretary of the Home School Association, the Sacred Heart Rosary Society, and the Area Council of Catholic Women. She was a C.C.D. teacher for 10 years, a 4-H leader for many years and a member of the Sacred Heart Choir. In her productive years, she made lOO's of crib quilts for the Pope's Storeroom and lOO's of Rosaries which were sent to the Missions. She served as President of the Dundee Legion Auxiliary and the Heron Lake Hospital - Home Auxiliary. She was active in the Senior Citizen Association, in the County Nurses Auxiliary and a member of the Library Board. She served on the Meals on Wheels and Food Shelf programs. On April 15, 1995, she moved to Worthington, MN and become a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church serving as Lector and Greeter and became a member of Guild X. She was an active member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Elks, Christian Women's and R.S.V.P. She thoroughly enjoyed family, friends and life. Her hobbies were golfing, bowling, reading, card playing, sewing, traveling and baking. She was very proficient in her baking skills. One of her specialties was the German delicacy, namely, Kucken. Many times she was asked by those celebrating an Anniversary to bake some for their families' breakfast the day of the celebration. She was known as a gentle, kind, and patient Mother and had a smile for everyone. Survivors include three daughters; Cheryl and husband Leo Bents of Reading, MN, Linda Bents of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jeanne and husband Larry Behrends of Sioux Falls, SD. She was also blessed with five grandchildren; Mike (Andrea) Bents of Tracy, MN, Michelle (Leon) Kelderman of Orange City, Iowa, Dawn Turbes of Houston, Texas, Jill Bents of Monticello, MN, Tim (Heidi) Bents of Bigelow, MN and seven great-grandchildren, along with stepchildren, sister Loretta Schmitz of St. James, MN and sister-in-law Vemiece Pelzel of Duluth, MN. Marcy will be welcomed into heaven by husbands, parents, four brothers; Arthur, Cyril, Raymond and Paul, and four sisters; Agnes Kock, Wilma Lunders, Pauline Schaffer, Berniece Clausen and Magdalen Schaffer. In lieu of flowers or memorials she asks for a kind deed done to someone in her memory.
Funeral mass will be at 11:00 am on Friday, August 2, 2013 at St. Marys Catholic Church with Father James Callahan officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Heron Lake, MN.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 am on Friday, August 2, 2013 at St. Marys Catholic Church.
