Mariella E. Heeren, age 85, of Clinton, IA, formerly of Dakota City, NE passed away Tuesday May 27, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice Home in Bettendorf, IA. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held on July 20, 2:00 p.m., at the St. Killian's Catholic Church in St. Killian, MN, with a period of visitation prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the funeral service at the St. Killian Catholic Cemetery with a luncheon to follow. The Pape Funeral Home in Clinton, IA is assisting the family. Mariella was born on Nov. 11, 1928 in Nobles County, MN, the daughter of Nickolas and Anna (Schmit) Probst. She married Alvin Heeren in 1951 in St. Killian; he died in 1982. She worked in the kitchen of the Marina Inn Motel in S. Sioux City, NE, for over 25 years, retiring at the age of 83 in 2012. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in S. Sioux City, NE. She enjoyed yard work, gardening, baking, playing yatzee, and attending several Sioux City Explorer and Clinton Lumberkings baseball games. Mariella also enjoyed being around and occasionally babysitting her 2 favorite bassett hounds, Boomer and Bernice. She enjoyed July 4th fireworks celebrations in her backyard with Ron, Marcia and Kirsten, minus the actual fireworks, which she was not a fan of. Mariella volunteered time at the Winnebago Reservation, helping to teach canning skills. She also understood the importance of helping others and in doing so, donated approximately 6 gallons of blood over her lifetime. Most importantly, she looked forward to and enjoyed free pie Wednesday's at the Village Inn with her granddaughter Kirsten a time each week where grandma caught up with the daily happenings of her granddaughter.
Mariella is survived by her son, Ron (Marcia) Heeren of Clinton, IA; her granddaughter, Kirsten; two sisters, Anna Mae Fuerstenberg of St. Killian, MN and Angie (James) Mixner of Worthington, MN; a brother, Donald (Doris) Probst of Worthington, MN; a sister-in-law, Elvera Wagner of Worthington, MN; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Genevieve & Frances, and two brothers, Nickolas & Henry. The family would further like to recognize April McFall, Executive Director of the Regency retirement residence in Clinton for her assistance in providing a smooth transition for Mariella from living in her own home to living in an apartment, April provided a calming influence. The family is especially grateful to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House located in Bettendorf, IA. The staff, which included a phenomenal physician who took the time to sit down with the family and explain the process, and remarkable nurses, nurses aides, and cleaning staff that provided Mariella with care, comfort and most importantly dignity.
