Marilyn "Jo" Platt

Marilyn "Jo" Platt, 86, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at her daughter's home in Council Bluffs, IA. She had been in failing health due to congestive heart failure for many of her last years.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, with Rev. Michael VanVelzer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 21st, 2014 at the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison and for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude's Hospice of Council Bluffs, Iowa and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

She was married to Francis Platt on Nov. 22, 1948. in Waterloo, IA. They owned and operated Forest Park Recreation in Marshalltown, IA. They moved to Ashton, IA where they owned and operated Platt Market, and "Smiley's Drive Inn. She returned to school and in 1978 received certification as a substance abuse counselor and worked for the Substance Abuse Treatment Center of Central Iowa, Grinnell, IA. After retiring she moved to Kansas to be near her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis Platt (April 11, 1982), 3 infant sons, and one brother. Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Hartzell, Council Bluffs, IA., Shirley (Larry) VandenBrink, Leavenworth, KS., and Charlotte (Kenny) Rathert, Lancaster, KS, a son, Mark (Nina) Platt, Raytown, MO, a sister, Iris Shaffer, Waterloo, IA, nine grandchildren, Jim, Jill, and Jeff Hartzell, Council Bluffs, IA, Brandy VandenBrink Fox, Middletown, PA, Brooke VandenBrink Johnson, Atchison, KS, Michael Platt, Cedar Rapids, IA, Melinda Platt, Cedar Rapids, IA, Stacey Rathert, Oxford, MS, and Steven Rathert, Hays, KS, twenty seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
