MCC student selected as Youth Tour delegate, trip to D.C. planned

WORTHINGTON -- One student from Nobles Cooperative Electric's service area was recently selected to represent Nobles Cooperative Electric on a week-long, all-expense paid tour of Washington D.C. from June 12-17.

LeAnna Homandberg, a junior at Murray County Central, was selected as the cooperative's Youth Tour delegate. She will join 1,400 high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors from cooperatives throughout the country while representing represent Nobles Cooperative Electric. Homandberg is the daughter of Mike and Esther, rural Slayton.

The second-place winner is Jackie Martin, a sophomore at Worthington High School. She won $150. Martin is the daughter of Tom and Deb, rural Reading.

Alissa Sauer, a junior at Adrian High School, received third place and $100. She is the daughter of Barry and Kerry, rural Lismore.

Bridget Enninga, Fulda High School; and Isaac Wass, Worthington High School, received honorable mentions.

The Youth Tour is open to all high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who live or go to school in Nobles Cooperative Electric's service area.

Those who apply participate in the contest by writing an essay on an energy-related topic. A panel of three judges reviews each submitted application and essay; they then choose the finalists and interview them. More than 40 students applied this year.

The Washington Youth Tour includes meetings with national leaders, as well as visits to all the major sights. Students meet and discuss their views and interests with students from other states while learning about government, history, careers in public service and electric cooperatives.

Nobles Cooperative Electric sponsors the program to encourage future leaders in the community.
