Melvin Kohorst

Melvin Kohorst, 66 of Lismore, MN died Tuesday at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN.

Melvin was born May 14, 1947 in Farming Township in Stearns County, Minnesota. He is the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Rausch) Kohorst. He graduated from Albany High School in 1965 and then entered the United States Army October 18, 1965. Melvin served stateside and overseas Germany and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on October 17, 1971.

Following his discharge, Melvin Lived in Chicago, IL and attended DeVry Institute of Technology and earned an Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. He married Vicki Cressler on May 3, 1980 in Chicago. They moved to Lismore, MN in 1983 where Melvin operated the Electric Motor Center. He was known as "MacGyver" because he could figure out how to fix anything.

Melvin enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. He was a member of the American Legion Post at Lismore.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki; four children, Kathy Balch, Stacy (Mike) Shaffer, Chaz Kohorst and Ryan (Tammy) Kohorst; eight grandchildren; six sisters, Rosalie (Norv) Stiyer, Evelyn (Roman) Svoboda, Valeria Schwab (Bob Barnum), Janice (John) Decker, Elaine Martig and Sandy (Gary) Eickhoff.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Luella Kohorst; a brother-in-law, William Martig; a nephew, Scott Schwab; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margorie and Lucien Cresller.

Memorial service will be 1 pm July 5, 2014 at the Adrian Funeral Home.
