Memorial Day programs planned around area
ADRIAN: Rev. John Strunk will be the featured speaker at a Memorial Day Service at 9 a.m. Monday at the Catholic Cemetery, and 9:30 a.m. at the Public Cemetery. Refreshments will be served at the Legion Hall following the services.
ASHTON, Iowa: A Memorial Day program will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Legion and Community Building. Services at the cemetery will follow at approximately 10:30 a.m.
AVOCA: Donald E. Ewy Post/Unit 576 will host a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Avoca Community Hall. Speaker will be Sen. Jim Vickerman. Lunch will be served at the Avoca Legion Hall following the service.
BEAVER CREEK: Beaver Creek Elementary School will be the site of a 10:30 a.m. Memorial Day Service on Monday. Guest speakers are Wade Blomgren, an active Army vet, and Brad Tatge, an active Navy vet. A pancake breakfast will be served at the fire hall from 7 to 9 a.m., with coffee and bars served at the school from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The Dell Hogan American Legion Post 123 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 11:15 a.m. at the Beaver Creek Cemetery. There will be a noon potluck at the Dell Hogan American Legion.
BREWSTER: The Brewster American Legion Post 464 will host a Memorial Day program at 9 a.m. Monday at the Legion Hall, with guest speaker Second District President Lesley Christoffer. There will be a service in the city park after the program.
CHANDLER: The Chandler American Legion and Auxiliary will host a Memorial Day Service at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Chandler Community Center with Commander Jake Stoel. Music by the MCC Ensemble.
CURRIE: There will be a 11:15 a.m. Memorial Day program Monday in Currie at the Currie Fire Hall, with services at the Willow Lake Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., at Pioneer Cemetery at 10 a.m., and the IHM Cemetery at 10:15 a.m.
DUNDEE: A Memorial Day program in Dundee on Monday will begin with a graveside service at the Kinbrae Cemetery at 9 a.m. Coffee and rolls will be served at the First Lutheran Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m., with the program to begin at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will follow the program at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery and the First Lutheran Cemetery.
ELLSWORTH: A Memorial Day service will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Ellsworth High School Gym, with Don Kramer as the featured speaker. The Ellsworth Drum Line will also perform at the event, which is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
FULDA: The Memorial Day program in Fulda begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Fulda Elementary School, with the Rev. David Baumgarn as the featured speaker. Parade line-up will be at the elementary school at 8:30 a.m. The parade will proceed to the Fulda Lake for services and back to the school for the program. Following the program, the VFW and American Legion members and colors will proceed to Prairie Hill Cemetery and then to St. Gabriel's Cemetery for military services.
HARDWICK: A dedication ceremony for the Hardwick Area Veterans Memorial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the site south of the fire hall. Keynote speaker is Sen. Jim Vickerman (D-Tracy). The event is hosted by the Hardwick American Legion. People are asked to bring their lawn chairs. Coffee, juice and cookies will be served following the ceremony.
HERON LAKE: Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Janet Martin will speak at a Memorial Day program at 9 a.m. at Heron Lake Community Center. Military salutes will be 7:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery and 7:45 a.m. at Lakeside Cemetery.
HILLS: Kyle Oldre will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day service in Hills at 9 a.m. Monday. A ceremony at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery will follow. Coffee and rolls will be served in the Legion Hall following the events.
HOLLAND: The Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at the Holland Cemetery, with music provided by the Pipestone Junior Band. A light buffet will follow at the senior center.
IONA: Memorial Day services will take place Monday in Iona, at 8:30 a.m. at the Badger Lake Cemetery, and at 9 a.m. at the St. Columba Cemetery with a Mass at 9:45 a.m. Please bring a lawn chair. Coffee and cookies will be served at the St. Columba Hall following the service. Guest speaker will be Deb Klaasen.
JACKSON: A Memorial Day parade will begin at 9:15 a.m. starting in Ashley Park, with the line-up beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will go through downtown Jackson and end with the wreath ceremony at Halloran Bridge on Ashley Street, with featured speaker Kirk Dunlavy, a sergeant first class with the Minnesota National Guard. After the wreath ceremony, a memorial ceremony will be at Sunset Cemetery.
JASPER: A Memorial Day program will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, with a lunch provided by the Quarry Lions from 11 a.m. to noon at the Memorial Hall. The guest speaker will be Harold "Butch" Miller.
JEFFERS: The Rev. Paul Sajban of Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Windom, will be the featured speaker at a Memorial Day program beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Red Rock Central Elementary School's gym. A military salute will be in Jeffers Cemetery after the program.
LAKE WILSON: The Lake Wilson Legion and Auxiliary will host a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lake Wilson Legion Hall. The American Legion Herbert Holtke Post 285 will pay tribute at the following cemeteries Monday: 8:45 a.m., Ellsborough Lutheran Cemetery; 9:15 a.m., Lutheran Cemetery; 9:45 a.m., Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock; 10 a.m., Woodstock Cemetery, Diamond Corner; 10:30 a.m., Hillside Cemetery, Lake Wilson.
LAKEFIELD: A Memorial Day program will be 10:30 a.m. at Lakefield Cemetery, with Ken Rodenberg of the Lakefield VFW as the featured speaker. Music will be provided by the Jackson County Central High School Band. A potluck dinner at the Lakefield American Legion Hall begins at 12 p.m.
LISMORE: The American Legion and Auxiliary will have a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday in the Lismore American Legion Hall, followed by military services at the three cemeteries: St. Anthony, Lismore, and St. Anthony West. A community potluck meal will follow in the Legion hall.
LUVERNE: A Memorial Day service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne. Speaker is Felicia Hansen, mother of Luverne soldier Andrew Hansen. The program is hosted by Rock County VFW Post 2757, Dell Hogan American Legion Post 123 and their auxiliaries.
MELVIN, Iowa: 1st Sgt. Paul Heitritter, who returned from Iraq in September 2007, will be the speaker for a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Baker Township Cemetery, Melvin. American Legion Guthrie Post 470 is in charge of the program.
MOUNTAIN LAKE: Robert Gardner of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will be the featured speaker in a Memorial Day program at 9 a.m. in the city park's bandstand. Music will be provided by the Mountain Lake Public School Senior High band and vocalist Martha Standerwick.
OCHEYEDAN, Iowa: A program will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the cemetery (at Town Hall in the event of rain). Music will be provided by the Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School Brass Ensemble, and S-O second-graders will recite the Gettysburg Address. The Rev. Chris Ebbers of Harris United Methodist Church will give the address.
OKABENA: The Okabena American Legion Post and Auxiliary will host a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at the post home. Music will be provided by the Southwest Star Concept Band and Okabena Legion and Auxiliary Chorus. Cemetery services will precede the program: 8:30 a.m., Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Ewington Township; 8:50 a.m., Old Rost Cemetery; 9:15 a.m., St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Rost Township; 9:40 a.m., St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
PIPESTONE: A Memorial Day program will begin at 10 a.m. at New Woodlawn Cemetery, with guest speaker Lt. Thomas Snell.
ROUND LAKE: The Round Lake American Legion and Auxiliary will have a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Round Lake School. Music will be provided by the Round Lake-Brewster Band. Speaker will be SFC Scott Kruger, who served 22 months in Iraq with the Minnesota National Guard. A service will follow at the Round Lake Cemetery.
SIBLEY, Iowa: A Memorial Day service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Holman Township Cemetery.
SIOUX VALLEY: American Legion Post 614 and Auxiliary will conduct a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sioux Valley Cemetery. A program will be at 11:15 a.m. at Sioux Valley Lutheran School. Speaker will be Sgt. Brent Pohlman of the Minnesota National Guard. A potluck dinner will follow.
SLAYTON: The Slayton American Legion and Auxiliary and VFW and Auxiliary will host a Memorial Day program at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the MCC High School Gym, with readings by Larry Dahl and master of ceremonies Bob Gass. Cemetery services: 9 a.m., Memorial Gardens; 9:30 a.m., Hadley; 10 a.m., St. Ann's; 10:10 a.m., wreath in river; 10:15 a.m., North Cemetery.
STORDEN: Brandon Roskamp will be the speaker for a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Storden Civic Center. Music will be provided by a Red Rock Central ensemble and Margaret Swanson. A potluck dinner will follow at the Legion hall.
WESTBROOK: A Memorial Day program will be 10:30 a.m. at the Westbrook-Walnut Grove High School gym. A military salute will be after the program in Westbrook Cemetery, at 9 a.m. in Rosehill Cemetery and at 9:15 a.m. in Mennonite Cemetery.
WILMONT: Pacholl-Moser Post 260 of Wilmont will host a Memorial Day program in Wilmont following services at cemeteries. The services include: 8:30 a.m., Reading Cemetery; 9:15 a.m., St. Kilian; and 10 a.m., Wilmont Cemetery, with fellowship luncheon at the post home, served by the VFW Auxiliary.
WINDOM: The Windom American Legion will host a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Windom Community Center, with the Rev. Terry Frovik as the guest speaker. Music will be provided by the Chordhustlers. A memorial service at Lakeview Cemetery will take place after the program, with a luncheon at the Eagles Club to follow.
WORTHINGTON: The Worthington American Legion, VFW and auxiliaries will host a Memorial Day service at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Garden of Memories with Rev. Robert Raedeke as the guest speaker. At 9 a.m., Rev. Larry Brixius will be the guest speaker at St. Mary's Cemetery; and at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Robert Raedeke will be the guest speaker at Worthington Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at Chautauqua Park, with a 21-gun salute, taps, a fly-over with a wreath dropping in Lake Okabena and a performance by the Worthington City Band. Master of Ceremonies is Tony Reiger.
