MEN'S WRESTLING: Bluejays defeated by Itasca on mats
The Minnesota West wrestling team was defeated 30-15 by Itasca in its first dual match this season Wednesday in Grand Rapids.
Jadon Evans (157 pounds), Greg Gainey (165), Ben Goodwin (184) and Jerrell Ferguson (197) won their bouts for the Bluejays.
Evans posted an 8-5 decision against Lucas Copp, Gainey used a 4-1 decision to turn back David Booth and Goodwin preserved a 6-5 decision over Vernon Rash.
Ferguson scored the only pin for Minnesota West, when he knocked off Ross Anderson in 2 minutes, 40 seconds.
Itasca claimed six other weight-class matches.
Turner Albrecht won a 9-4 decision from John Bush at 125; Brent Johnson pinned Matt Magner in 5:31 at 141; Thomas Gullikson pinned Michael Tanner in 3:38 at 149; and Michael Dyer topped Taylor Andrews by a 9-6 decision.
"I was happy because we started coming through with victories in the later weight classes," Bluejays coach Bob Purcell said. "We're just giving up to many points at the beginning of matches.
Itasca won two other bouts by forfeit.
"With two open weight classes, its hard to overcome giving up 12 points," Purcell said.
