Minnesota West: Lady Jays run away with Hibbing
BRAINERD —Minnesota West Community and Technical College’s offense was clicking on nearly every cylinder, as the Lady Jays basketball team ran past Hibbing with strong conviction Friday night at the Central Lakes Classic.
The Lady Jays, with an 89-48 win, set themselves up for today’s competition with a full head of steam. West plays Vermillion today at noon.
“After being off for three weeks it was good to get back on the floor,” Lady Jays coach Mike Fury reported after the win. “We’re finding each other off the fast break and are running the floor well. Any time you have a break and come back with a good effort, you have to be happy with that.”
West put together a 15-point lead midway through the opening half and went on a 27-10 run to lead by 18 points, at 55-23, by the break. Forced turnovers led to the run for the Jays as sophomore Tiffany Gehl and freshman Lydia Kemper were able to lead the team up-and-down the floor briskly in transition.
The Jays hit six three-pointers in the contest and sank a staggering 29 two-pointers. Sophomore forward Lindsey Drooger, of Edgerton, hit three treys in the contest on her way to 25 points. Gehl added 21, Kemper notched 13, Kristen Andersen nine and Bailey Tish eight.
Drooger and freshman Brittney Hermeling reined in seven rebounds each and Bridget Kramer and Kemper handed out five assists apiece.
For Hibbing, Taylor Martin led the way with 25 points.
The win for the Lady Jays gives them confidence, Fury said, as Southern Division games in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference begin next week. Today’s game can add to that. Minnesota West’s women are now 9-3 on the season.
“We want to use Saturday as a warm up for south division play,” Fury said. “We want to play well and need to be playing well heading into (that portion of the season).”
Results of Friday’s men’s game between Minnesota West and Central Lakes was unavailable at presstime.
