Minnesota West wrestling: Bluejays' Goodwin wins at Rochester Open
ROCHESTER — Minnesota West Bluejay wrestler Ben Goodwin won his 174-pound weight class Saturday at the Rochester Open.
Goodwin went 2-0 on the day, winning his first match 6-5 against Garret Miller of Rochester and winning his second match 7-3 against freshman Darick Vancura of Mankato. Miller was third in the nation last year in the junior college ranks. Vancura, a Jackson County Central High School graduate, is a two time prep state champion.
Four other Bluejay wrestlers competed. Kareed Williams went 0-2 at 125 pounds. Matt Henning went 0-2 at 125 pounds. Michael Tanner was 1-3 at 141 pounds and Jared Nickman was 4-1 at 157 pounds.
Nickman placed third in his weight class.
Minnesota West head coach Bob Purcell said the competition was keen on Saturday, but for the most part he saw lots of room for improvement.
“We made a lot of mistakes that can be corrected. We didn’t wrestle as well as we have in practice,” he said. “Actually, I’m looking forward to doing a lot better.”
