MN WEST BASKETBALL: Lady Jays open conference season with loss
WORTHINGTON -- The Minnesota West women's basketball team lost a close one Wednesday night as they took on Minnesota State Techinical College at Fergus Falls.
The Lady Jays dropped a 55-53 heartbreaker to open conference play and dropped to 11-5 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
Head coach Mike Fury said the first half was a back and forth battle, with the Spartans heading into halftime with a slight 30-27 lead.
Fergus Falls was able to build a seven-point lead (40-33) around the 12-minute mark of the second half. However, the Lady Jays battled back and even attained a two-point lead (49-47) with just a couple of minutes left in regulation.
With one minute left to play, Fergus Falls managed to tie the score at 49-all. Then, Taylor Brue hit a big 3-pointer to give the Spartans a 52-49 advantage and eventually the win.
"It was a sluggish effort by the girls tonight," Fury said. "We struggled all night long and were never able to build any sort of significant lead. We worked our way back in the second half, but our efforts fell short."
MN West travels to Willmar Wednesday to take on Ridgewater in another conference matchup. Fury hopes for different results then.
"Our intensity was lacking tonight," he said. "We just weren't aggressive at all."
