WORTHINGTON -- It has been two weeks since Mike Haiar started his new job as store director at the Worthington Hy-Vee, but he is in his 16th year of working for the company.

Haiar comes to Worthington fresh from his job as assistant store director in Omaha, Neb. He has already purchased a home in Worthington and is expecting his wife Stacie and son Kaleb to join him shortly.

"There is quite a bit to move," he said with smile last week. "Luckily, Hy-Vee helps take care of moving."

The Worthington store is about half the size of the store he worked at in Omaha, but he likes the size, the layout and the community.

"At Hy-Vee, you choose what jobs you want to put in for, and I chose this area," Haiar stated.

One thing he enjoys about working for Hy-Vee is the autonomy he is given.

"We make decisions right here every day," he said. "We don't have to wait for corporate - we can do what is right for the community."

He also likes working with local people who bring in and sell their products and has no plans to make immediate changes.

"This store has been run very well," Haiar said. "It has a country friendliness, and many people tell me how great things have always been here."

Hy-Vee is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and features home style meals and an extensive meat counter, seafood, produce, a floral shop, fresh-baked breads and bakery items and an extensive delicatessen.

"We have great quality products," Haiar stated.
