Obituary: Gary Van Der Zwaag
Mr. Gary Van Der Zwaag, age 70, of rural Hospers, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
The service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers, with the Rev. David Powers officiating. Interment will follow in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home, Orange City.
Gary Keith was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Orange City, the son of Bernard and Vaida (Kuiken) Van Der Zwaag. He was raised in the Newkirk area.
On August 7, 1959, he married Janice Jean Dontje in Buffalo Center. They farmed at Newkirk, and he also drove bus for the Floyd Valley and MOC-FloydValley Schools for 32 years.
Gary was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church. He enjoyed fishing and all spectator sports, and he looked forward to family get-togethers.
Survivors include his wife of more than 49 years, "Jan"; three sons, Brent (Marliss) Van Der Zwaag, Orange City; Douglas Van Der Zwaag, Parker, Colo., and Brian (Angie) Van Der Zwaag, Hospers; five grandchildren, Katie, Eric and Rylie Van Der Zwaag; and Tyler and Brody Wassenaar; his mother, Vaida Van Der Zwaag, Orange City; a brother, Marion (Carol) Van Der Zwaag, Sheldon; and a sister, Karen (Tom) Feit, Rushmore.
He was preceded in death by his father.
