Helen F. Nelson was born on Jan 3, 1922 to Louis A. and Fern (Jones) Wilkinson in Mankato, MN. She was baptized in the Congregational Church and later confirmed her faith in the Lutheran Church. Her mother died when Helen was 5 years old and she and her sister Jean were raised by her grandmother and father in Mankato and aunts in Walnut Grove. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1939 and Mankato State College in 1943 with a B.S. degree in elementary education.

Helen was united in marriage to Kenneth M. Nelson in Laredo, TX in 1944. They returned to Minneapolis after WWII so Ken could attend the University of MN school of Dentistry. In 1951 they moved to Madison, MN and on July 1, 1953, moved to Windom as Ken began his dental practice. In 1959, Ken and Helen moved into their home on 16th Street. They later bought a cabin at Fish Lake and a home in Mesa where they spent the past 22 winters.

Helen was a longtime, dedicated member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom where she was active in choir and Sunday school. She also was a charter member of the Literary Club, a member of the AAUW and many civic events and groups. Throughout Helen's life she cherished spending time with her family and friends, summers at Fish Lake, and had a passion for animals. She loved people and she was beloved by all who knew her.

For 10 years Helen battled with osteoporosis, and had chronic pain the past 2 years. Early this spring she was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and congestive heart failure. She entered the Windom Area Hospital on Friday, August 29th, and later passed away that evening at the age of 86.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ken; one daughter, Nancy Michalski of Windom; two sons, Steve and wife, Mindy of Boston, and Gary of Windom; 9 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Hoover of Madison, MN; one sister-in-law, Deloris Guenther of Mankato and many nieces and nephews.

Blessed be the memory of Helen F. Nelson.
