Obituary: John Stam
Dr. John Stam, 89, of Rapid City died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Westhills Village Care Center.
He was born August 31, 1918 in Paterson, NJ to Peter and Margaret Stam. His early years were spent in Narberth, PA until the family moved to Wheaton, IL where he finished high school and graduated from Wheaton College. John was active in cross country and glee clubs. He then attended the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago and obtained a medical degree.
Moving to Minneapolis, MN to finish his residency he met Bonnie Jean Campbell at Northwestern Hospital. They were married December 20, 1945 in Tracy, MN.
He began his medical practice in Worthington, MN as a pediatrician. John was active in the community and in the First Baptist Church. He loved boating, running and the outdoors. After 30 years, John and Bonnie retired to their log home in Hill City for 20 years until moving to Westhills Village in Rapid City. They enjoyed traveling and he particularly enjoyed playing his trombone in the New Horizons Band.
Survivors include his wife Bonnie, of Rapid City; three daughters, Rebecca Beebe and her husband, Gary, of Chanhassen, MN, Margaret Robbins and her husband, Bill, Hill City, and Muriel Anderson, Hill City. Two sons, John Stam and his wife, Mary of Enid, OK and Paul Stam and his wife, Cindy of Worthington, MN.; a sister, Ruth Jordan of Shoreview, MN and a brother, Peter Stam of Wilmington, NC; 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Margaret Robertson, and a daughter, Mary Louise Hafner.
A private family burial will be in the Hill City Cemetery.
A memorial Service will be held 1:30 PM. Monday, June 2, 2008 at South Canyon Baptist Church in Rapid City with Dr. Richard Wells officiating with a reception following the services to greet the family.
The family suggests memorials to Christian Life Ministries of Rapid City or Campus Crusade Ministries.
