Obituary: Margaret Murphy
Margaret M. (Peterson) Murphy passed away on May 8th, 2008 at the age of 99 years at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Margaret was born in Inwood, Iowa on May 2, 1909 to Ingeborg Maria (Syverson) Peterson and John Peterson. During her early years she lived in Hedgesville, Montana and later in Windom, Minnesota where she attended school. Margaret also worked as a waitress in Windom at the Minute Café.
She married John B. Murphy on June 30th, 1931, in Jackson. The couple lived in Windom, Jackson & Ellsworth before moving to Adrian in 1942. Along with her husband, John, Margaret owned & operated Murphy Construction. She was a very busy woman raising seven sons and one daughter. She was very active at St. Adrian's Church, choir and Catholic Daughters. In addition, Margaret was also bookkeeper for the business.
Since 2003, while Margaret was a resident at the Good Samaritan Center, she especially enjoyed visits from her family, cards, bingo, crossword puzzles, travel and all of the other activities at the Center where she made many friends.
Margaret is survived by six sons: Wayne (Jean) Murphy, Pine Springs, MN; Gene (Karen) Murphy, Sioux Falls, SD; Loren (Ardy) Murphy, Faribault, MN; John Murphy, Hayden Lake, ID; Pat (Trish) Murphy, Lake City, MN; Jerry Murphy, Adrian, MN and one daughter, Mary (Chuck) Utley, Sioux Falls. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. Margaret has three surviving sisters, Ellen Westerlund, Windom, MN; Hazel Coulson, Sun City, AZ and Alice Macdonald, Sun City, AZ; and also a brother Marvin Peterson, Sun City, AZ. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John, one son, Michael, and two daughters-in-law, Mavis & Cheryl.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Adrian Catholic Church, Adrian, Minnesota, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13th, with burial at St. Adrian's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 pm-8 pm on Monday, with parish prayers at 7:30 pm, at Dingmann Funeral Home, 109 E. 7th St., Adrian. Visitation also from 10 to 10:45 am Tuesday at the funeral home.
