Olaf George Matson

Olaf Matson was born on April 16, 1915 on a farm north of Lismore, Minnesota to Jacob and Amelia Gunderson Matson. Olaf was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Adrian. He grew up on the family farm and was active in 4-H. While attended Adrian High School Olaf participated in basketball, baseball and football. Olaf graduated from Adrian High School in 1932. He then moved to a farm north of Hadley, MN for a short time before moving to a farm north of Lake Wilson, MN. On September 22, 1956 he and Elfrieda Stelter were married at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church west of Lynd, MN. Following their marriage they made their home on Olafs farm. In 1981 they retired but remained on the farm until 1994 when they moved to Slayton. In 2009 they moved to Sunrise Terrace Apartments in Slayton. Elfrieda passed away on May 20, 2010. In 2013 Olaf became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton and on April 22, 2014 Olaf moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton where he passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the age of 99. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton. Olaf enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, visiting with family and friends and watching the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include his two children and their spouses, Mark and Kari Matson of Marshall, MN and Monica and Patrick Staples of Sioux Falls, SD, four grandchildren, Alyssa Matson, Tyler Matson, Jerome Staples and Andrea Staples and one sister, Edna Voss of Slayton, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Elfrieda, sister, Enger Kruse and her husband, Jake, brother, Ted Matson and his wife, Norma and brother-in-law, Henry Voss.

Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Doug Minton officiating. The organist is Kathy Schwartz. The pallbearers are Brian Matson, Keith Voss, Robert Voss, Stanley Stelter, Lyle Stelter and Roger Carlson. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4-6 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. To send condolences visit totzkefuneralhome.com
